Peggy of the Cove

One cold and dreary autumn night
Wild winds drove waves to awesome height.
Our captain steered the ship with skill
In hopes of reaching safety; still
All those aboard wore looks of fright
For just below and out of sight,
Halibut Rock lay barely submerged.
As onward we to disaster surged.

Unaware there came a thund’rous crash
The hull was split from fore to aft.
The sea rushed in from all around
With fearful thoughts that all would drown.
All hands clung fast to wood or mast
In hope the melee to outlast.
Our ship, no match for merciless waves
And they were swept to their watery graves.

I cried while tossed by that swirling sea
And prayed its grip would set me free.
My heart filled with hope as I rode a great crest
Then felt cold wet rocks where I’d come to rest.
I lay limp and helpless for an eternity
Wondering if there was a future for me
When I felt strong arms of a huge gallant man
Carry me safely to solid dry land.

News of the rescue soon spread far and wide;
Many folks came to see me – the child who survived!
Much talk about Peggy, my now famous name,
Though nobody knew from whence I came.
“Let’s go see Peggy of the Cove,-- they would say,
(At least, that’s the story that is still told today).
Tenderly cared for, I loved my new home.
Safe and secure I would never more roam.

Peggy is the name I was given
Nova Scotia is where I’ve been living.
All lost at sea save me alone
Miraculously rescued on slippery smooth stone.
Thousands each year this site come to see
Famous Peggy’s Cove, named after me.
